Talking to... A Wedding Videographer

We’re so excited to be starting a new blog series! Welcome to our ‘Talking to…’ Series. We’re going to be talking to some of our favourite wedding suppliers, asking them all the questions you wish you could!

So let’s kick things off by talking to award-winning, London Wedding Videographer, Rob from Pretty in White.

We first met Rob back in 2018 at our beautiful couple, Amanda & Karol’s intimate wedding. We were helping to style, plan and manage the wedding day for Amanda & Karol and all their guests. The whole wedding party were based in the States and so we were bringing together the crème de la crème of wedding suppliers for this one. Since, Rob has moved a little closer to our Suffolk base and is always our first choice when couples are looking for a dreamy, romantic and simply stunning wedding film.

What made you start your business?

I’ve always loved photography, especially shooting people. What first drew me to weddings was the prospect of working with clients who would not only pose for gorgeous shots but also let me capture them during the candid, goofy moments. So in 2010 I tagged along with some established wedding photographers, learned the trade and started taking on my own clients.

The video side was really an accident. One couple wanted a little highlight video as well as the photography package, so I said I’d give it a go! Well, it turned out pretty well, the clients loved the film as much as the still images and I really enjoyed the challenge of piecing together a story. The better I got at the filming side, the more that took over. For a few years I offered both video and stills, but I was making more of an impact as a filmmaker and I love the challenge of it, so that’s all I do now.

Give us a fun fact or something no one knows about you

Me, my sister and my Mum share the same birthday!

What do you love to see in a wedding film or from your couples?

A sense of humour is my number one priority! I love having a laugh with my couples, and seeing them laughing together is the best thing, it really shows in the film. This also helps when something doesn’t quite go according to plan - often the weather. One of my favourite wedding films was shot in Italy, and what should have been a gorgeous sunny backdrop to an outdoor ceremony turned into an apocalyptic rain storm just as the bride approached the aisle. Everyone was drenched, it was brutal! Some couples would have been upset, but these guys thought it was hilarious, and their reaction made the film for me.

What is your favourite part of a wedding day?

The most fun part of the job for me is when there’s no time pressure and I can be most creative and experimental. This is usually during morning preps and the evening dancing. I start filming 3 hours before the ceremony, so I can try lots of ideas as the couple get ready. Sometimes there’s absolute chaos during preps and that’s great for me too – kids running around and everyone scrambling to get ready, I love all that energy and anticipation. In the evening, I have time to play with light and composition and capture the guests really letting their hair down. I like to stay for at least an hour after the first dance, and the party is a great note to end the day with.

Tell us your best wedding day story

I filmed a gorgeous wedding at Fulham Palace, and when I turned up to film the bride, she kept thanking her Mum for the wedding. It transpired that Mum had entered a competition in the Daily Mail on a whim and had won a luxury wedding for her daughter with the venue, catering, décor, DJ, planner, photographer, florist, bridal wear, transport, everything paid for – except me! So I was deeply honoured that I was the only supplier they’d paid for themselves, and it was such a great experience as everyone present was so appreciative to be having this amazing party. It was a dream wedding and all thanks to the mother of the bride.
