Talking to... A Wedding Stationer

We’re thrilled to be continuing our ‘Talking to…’ Series today, chatting to some of our favourite wedding suppliers, asking them all the questions you wish you could and getting you those answers. In a time when we can’t see people face to face, let’s embrace the virtual meet ups!

Today we’re talking to the award-winning wedding stationer, Lucy of Lucy McSpirit Design.

We first discovered Lucy’s incredible work when we were judging The Wedding Business Awards - at which Lucy won two brilliant titles. So it’s clear we genuinely loved her work! We then we’re thrilled to bring her on board a styled shoot we planned last year, with an Urban Jungle theme. It’s one of our favourite shoots to date, we styled and directed and we’re delighted that it is going to be featured on Rock My Wedding later this year. More on that soon.
So let’s get straight to it, here’s us talking to…Lucy McSpirit.

What made you start your business?

I've been working in Graphic Design now for almost 19 years including design account managing, graphic designer, print manager and more. I decided to go part-time freelance after having my children and offered the full service from design to print, whilst working on many branding opportunities, but I've always had a passion for art, floristry, illustration, paper and stationery from a very young age. When I got married in 2017 I designed my own wedding stationery and absolutely loved creating it. A couple of close friends then asked me to help with theirs and then in January 2019 I took a deep breath and made the leap into full time freelance graphic designer and wedding stationer. It was the best thing I ever did as it is a complete mixture of all my passions in one and has such variety. I’ve met so many new and amazing friends, clients, brides and grooms, suppliers, wedding industry professionals. I really love it.

Give us a fun fact or something no one knows about you

One that always surprises people is I'm a huge gamer and have been my whole life, Call of Duty is the one (before that was Lara Croft Tomb Raider, Halo and Splinter Cell...back in the day, I could go way back to the spectrum days but that just makes me feel old ha ha)! I’ve also met David Beckham and fun fact my hubster used to be a footballer and I watched him play for Antigua FC in the world cup qualifiers (proud wifey moment).

We're stationery mad, what's your favourite item of stationery!?

It has got to be wax seals! I love them and always trying new ways to incorporate them throughout my ranges, but in terms of a specific item of stationery, I just love the actual invites, that is when the excitement starts collating them and wrapping them in my packaging like a gift, ready to post out, the excited emails I receive from couples when I tell them 'they are on the way' and then an email of such joy and thanks when they have opened them at their end. It is the best feeling! I do also love on the day menus as they really get the mouth watering! I am a foodie so has to be those too.

What is your favourite part of a wedding day?

Following on from the last question, that would then be the food ha ha. Seriously though, it is hard to pinpoint which part of the day is my favourite as I love weddings so much! But when everyone is sat ready for food, people are more relaxed, everyone has had a couple of drinks and it really is a true sense of celebration. It is a great time of day, warming up ready to party the night away with your favourites.

What’s the most fun design you’ve worked on?

The most fun design I have worked on has to be 'Eden'. The range that incorporates elements of your actual flowers, it makes the stationery more three dimensional, touchy feely, I'm all for texture and adding to the senses that way, it adds more fun and true beauty to the design, I love flowers and like to work my designs around the floristry, mixed with graphic design and typography to keep it looking contemporary.
